This is Part 2 of my Walk Around the Lake series.
Today the dog and I tackled the hike around Lake Temescal in Oakland, CA. As you may recall, he didn’t quite make it around the last lake, Lake Merritt, read more about that here. He’s an old dog but loves to be outside and loves to see other dogs and friendly people.
Lake Temescal is kind of a jewel tucked away in Oakland near the intersection of Highway 24 and 13. There is swimming and fishing and hiking and picnicking. And during the summer, there’s a great beach and snack bar with ice cream. For little kids, it’s almost like being at the ocean. It reminds me of when our kids were little and we took them there over summertime to hang out in the sand.
Today was cool but perfect for a walk.
We parked in the lot just off of Broadway Terrace and started walking counter clockwise. The path starts out as a paved trail and we walked along the lake until we reached the waterfall. Then the beach area. And then, around the back of the lake, after going down some stairs, the trail turns to dirt and narrows. There are some lovely docks for fishing and sitting and just staring out over the lake. There were all kinds of water birds.
It was a short walk, only about 1 mile, but we made it! It took us about an hour, who would guess that it would take so long. But the dog, he had to sniff every spot we passed and had to watch every person pass us by. I didn’t have to carry him this time. I was very proud of him. He was slow, but he finished. I am not planning on taking him on my next hike around the lake. But stay tuned, it’s the best one yet.
What’s your favorite lake to hike around?
